- Word detective – Tutor writes target words on sticky notes and posts them on the wall. Then give clues or riddles to the child such as “find a word that rhymes with “smash.” This game targets sight words, decoding, or rhyming.
- Speed-reading – Children speed read high-frequency words to build word recognition and fluency. Children love trying to beat their time! Each time they read the sight-word list faster and faster, building confidence along with a strong bank of sight words.
- Word Tower – The tutor writes words on blocks (e.g., Jenga). As the child pulls a block, they read the word aloud. If they read it correctly, they keep the block in the tower!
- Silly Sentence Builder – The tutor writes nouns, verbs, adjectives, and adverbs on separate cards. The child picks one from each pile and creates a silly sentence such as “The fabulous purple giraffe dances loudly). This game targets vocabulary, sentence structure, and decoding.
Each lesson is purposeful and connected. Skills are introduced, practiced, and reinforced so progress feels steady and achievable.
